Mastering Serenity: The 4-7-8 Breathing Technique for Stress Relief

Happiness can come from many forms in life but one I think we can all agree on is relaxation. It’s so easy to get lost in the system that is day-to-day life. Work, eat, sleep, and repeat. When we seek a change it usually involves incorporating a workout regimen in the mix but why not relaxation too? Do you know all the benefits you can get by scheduling some downtime?

When you relax your brain releases endorphins that act as natural painkillers. Forms of relaxation, such as yoga, meditation, etc. can help lessen the pain you may be experiencing. Also, factors in health benefits can lower your heart rate and blood pressure after a busy day.

Relaxation goes so much further than that. Studies (Mayo Clinic) have shown that relaxation helps you gain new perspectives on stressful situations. So if a certain work, home, or personal issue has had you under a lot of pressure and stress some relaxation can help.

The next part is the answer to your “how can I get to a relaxed state when I’m this stressed?” And while there is sometimes no easy way there are still many to try! You may have to force it at first or ease your way into new relaxing techniques but I’m sure you’ll end up picking one up real fast.

Your relaxation method could be listening to music, reading a book, writing out your thoughts, soaking in a bath, and even meditation. Meditation is great for me when I can ease my anxiety and my stir-crazy mind into it. What has helped me the most is breathing techniques. It helps me to wind down and relax but also helps during the most stressful time of my day.

It’s important to find the most comfortable one for you. My go-to is the 4-7-8 breathing technique.

Close your lips and inhale through your nose for a count of four. Hold your breath for a count of seven. Exhale completely through your mouth making a whoosh sound for a count of eight. This completes one cycle. You can repeat this until you get to a state of relaxation. It calms me when I’m anxious and/or stressed but also helps when I’m trying to get a peaceful state for meditation and yoga.

Relaxation helps with many aspects of my life - managing stress and anxiety, helps me focus on the present and let the worries go, but it also helps creativity flow through me. Rest is a huge part of your well-being that can also help you achieve happiness in your daily life.

So live you, love you, and don’t forget to relax.

XO,

Ally
